In 1819, Sickles was born in New York City to Susan Marsh Sickles and George Garrett Sickles, a patent lawyer and politician. Hooker was born in Hadley, Massachusetts, the grandson of a captain in the American Revolutionary War. He was of entirely English ancestry, all of which had been in New England since the early 1600s. His initial schooling was at the local Hopkins Academy. George Tate (1840-1912), a native of Orange County, N.Y. In 1854-1859, he worked various jobs in Chautauqua County, including installing gas lamps for Fredonia Gas Co., briefly dabbling in book trade, and working for Aaron Kellogg & Co. which he left in 1859, in order to go to school.
